I came here in 1996 to set up the Charvel guitar project and live and work here in that capacity daily supervising Chushin, Dyna and Moridaira factorys building Charvel guitars, I did that from 1996 until 2000, when the Fujigen factory hired me as a custom guitar builder in their R and D department mostly for Fender and Ibanez instruments They placed orders and Matsumoku built the instrumentsįor what its worth, I am the first, last and only person in the music industry to ever supervise ANY Japanese instrument factory. Gibson, like Fender and any other US customers were just that customers. The first and only time they have ever done that is their Qingdao factory that is run by Sam Ick and they have or had one US guy there to watch over things. Gibson NEVER supervised ANY production of anything here in Japan Korea or China.

I have a couple dozen friends and former co workers who worked at Matsumoku. I pass by the location of the factory twice a day on my way to my shop and home. Matsumoku was owned by the same Taiwan entity that owns Singer Sewing Machines. Sometimes the musicians were lent a fine instrument to play as John Cohen did for Roscoe Holcomb for certain recordings and video shots. To support this statement one only need look at the video evidence and photographs. Having said this, most of the field recordings of the past forty years were made on these kinds of instruments as rural folks could barely afford more. They even make tacky wall hangers for the discriminating eye. They can have any of dozens of names on them but that does not make them any better than what they are. Often they are brought in with folks thinking they have a family heirloom when all they have is a cheap instrument that their grandparent or someone saw fit to buy. Those of us who teach or work in music retail see them everyday. They are all the same and really a waste of money for all but the very beginner who does not want to invest any real money. Just as with any other commodity like clothing, footwear cheap instruments are turned out by some nebulous entity and names are silk screened on these cheaply made and often crummy quality instruments including the CL listing above.
